What is a DSO?
A Dental Service Organization is a separate company that owns or manages a dental practice. Many are backed by private equity investors. The same dentists still provide care after the practice is purchased, but business decisions are then made by a central office with company-wide goals.
How can you tell if a practice is DSO-owned?
Some DSO owned practices are easy to spot because they carry a corporate brand name. However, others aren’t so easy to sniff out. Many practices get to keep the original practice name after they’re sold, so the sign on the door and the website still look the same after the practice is sold to a DSO. Here are a few ways to find out for sure:

- Look for changes like frequent dentist turnover, new policies, price changes, or a shift in how appointments feel.
